In the 1930s in France the usual age for the Roman Catholic First Communion 
was 11 or 12. This was a solemn event with much preparation having been done by the child before hand, there were certificates and of course photos to go to all the relatives.
In the case of these girls all the photos were taken in a studio made to look like a church and they all pose solemnly with bibles and rosaries.
Girls at this time wore long veils and white dresses often with puffed sleeves, high necklines, and full skirts,symbolizing purity, innocence and connection to the divine.
