In the 1930s in France the usual age for the Roman Catholic First Communion
was 11 or 12. This was a solemn event with much preparation having been done by the child before hand, there were certificates and of course photos to go to all the relatives.
Boys wore their Sunday Best, sometimes with polished shoes, or the less wealthy just wore their everyday boots. They also wore white armbands - probably, as in the case of the girls white dresses, to symbolise innocence and purity.
